Disaster Preparedness Tax Holiday? We’ll Take It!

Florida’s government offers two tax holidays so residents may purchase needed hurricane and storm-related supplies without being taxed. The State wants to give you a break on items needed to secure your home, move your pets, and survive should you lose power, etc. It’s a welcome break, especially these days when an elevated cost of living sneaks its way into all of our lives in some way. Besides the financial benefit to residents, it drives traffic to Florida businesses and assists in awareness campaigns. Storm preparedness is key for Florida residents. With so many new homeowners and residents coming in from other states, there is a necessary education process for storm preparation.

The Disaster Preparedness Tax Holiday comes at the onset of Florida’s Hurricane Season which begins June 1 and ends November 30, 2024. This is an excerpt from a March 7, 2024, Press Release from the Office of the President of the Florida Senate about the Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday:

The legislation creates two 14-day “disaster preparedness” sales tax holidays from June 1 – 14, 2024, and August 24 – September 6, 2024, for disaster preparedness supplies. Some examples of tax-free items include: flashlights and lanterns costing $40 or less; reusable ice costing $20 or less; radios costing $50 or less; tarps and ground anchors or tie-down kits costing $100 or less; coolers and portable power banks costing $60 or less; batteries and fuel tanks costing $50 or less; smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide detectors costing $70 or less; and generators costing $3,000 or less. The holiday also includes a number of items related to the safe evacuation of household pets.

Weather is a factor in our lives, be it snow and ice or hurricanes. No matter the situation, preparedness is key. Download the Disaster Supply Kit Checklist provided by FloridaDisaster.org for a complete list of needed supplies. Take advantage of the savings on supplies during the tax holidays. If you’ve not been in hurricane preparation mode, let us share some sage advice. Prepare early to avoid the stress of trying to buy water or any supplies only to find the shelves are already bare. Additionally, if you are required to evacuate, don’t wait until the last minute. Put up your hurricane shutters and hit the road.
