Citrus Springs – The Nature Coast
The Nature Coast
Citrus Springs is one of the most beautiful hidden gems in the state of Florida. Natural springs, diverse wildlife, and charming local restaurants paint a picture of a great Florida lifestyle. Living in Citrus Springs provides firsthand access to numerous things to do and explore. Citrus Springs is part of Florida’s Nature Coast, encompassing peaceful towns such as Crystal River, Homosassa, Inverness, and Lecanto. Each town has its own unique charm and attractions. Crystal River, for instance, is famous as the Home of the Manatee, where you can spot hundreds of these gentle giants in the springs during peak season. Three Sisters and Homosassa Springs are must-visit destinations for those who love paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply enjoying the beauty of the waters with snorkeling gear. Moreover, every small town in the area boasts its own distinct “downtown” area where you can find delightful boutique shops, delicious restaurants, historical landmarks, and town squares hosting live music and seasonal events. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are golf clubs, biking and walking trails, horseback riding farms, a wonderful fishing pier, and a beach at Fort Island. You’ll also find convenient big-box stores for your everyday shopping needs.
Freshwater Springs
The Crystal River area is well-known for its abundance of natural freshwater springs. These springs pump out millions of gallons of crystal-clear fresh water every day and feed the seven rivers that wind through the region, The springs provide a great place to “cool off” with temperatures a steady 72 degrees year-round. Exploring these natural water sources is truly a special aspect of living in Citrus Springs. Take guided tours in nearby Crystal River or Homosassa and snorkel alongside Manatee. Fun 2 Dive is a great option for these tours. They offer the chance to join a group swim or rent a boat with a guide for a semi-private tour of the manatee refuge. Biking along the Withlacoochee State Trail is a fantastic year-round activity. This 46-mile-long paved trail, once a railroad track, has been transformed into one of the longest paved rail-trails in Florida. The mostly flat terrain and multiple access points make for a leisurely bike ride between Citrus Springs and Dade City.
Dining Out
Dining out? Sugarmill Restaurant is housed in a replica of an 1830s sugar mill. The restaurant provides a griddle at each table for guests to cook their own pancakes to perfection. It is located inside De Leon Springs State Park so you’ll need to pay park admission to get in, but the experience is well worth it. Enjoy a meal and have fun with friends as you compete to see who can make the tastiest pancakes. While you wait, explore the park or browse the gift shop. For a delightful evening out with friends, Copp Winery & Brewery offers diners a historic European feel combined with old Florida charm. They have an outdoor space to savor the beautiful Florida weather while enjoying flights of craft beer and wine. If you want to purchase and cook your own dinner, be sure to visit Shellys Seafood Market in Homosassa. You can go by boat or car – it is a local favorite. Even better – hop on a boat and head into Gulf waters to capture your own fresh catch.
