Homemade Cleaning Products

Homemade cleaning products are easy to make, effective, and far less expensive than purchasing ready-made cleaning products at the store. Store-bought cleaning products contain ingredients that can be harmful to humans by irritating eyes, skin and the respiratory tract. Most everything you need to clean, you probably have in your kitchen already such as baking soda, vinegar, cornstarch, rubbing alcohol, lemon and olive oil.

Here are a few recipes so you can make your own cleaning products. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the feeling of freedom when you no longer find yourself wandering slowly down the “cleaning products” aisle at the grocery store.

All-Purpose Cleaner:

Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle.
Add a few drops of essential oil (such as lemon or tea tree oil) for a pleasant scent and extra antibacterial properties.
Shake well before each use.

Glass Cleaner:

Combine 1 cup of water with 1 cup of white vinegar in a spray bottle.
Optionally, add a tablespoon of cornstarch for extra cleaning power.
Shake well before use and spray onto glass surfaces, then wipe clean with a lint-free cloth or newspaper.

Disinfectant Spray:

Mix 1 part rubbing alcohol (at least 70% concentration) with 1 part water in a spray bottle.
Add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance, if desired.
Shake well before each use and spray on surfaces. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping clean.

Scouring Scrub:

Combine baking soda and water to form a paste.
Apply the paste to surfaces that need scrubbing, such as sinks, tubs, or countertops.
Scrub with a sponge or brush, then rinse thoroughly.

Wood Polish:

Mix equal parts of olive oil and white vinegar in a spray bottle.
Add a few drops of lemon essential oil for a fresh scent.
Spray onto a soft cloth and rub onto wooden surfaces in a circular motion.

Toilet Bowl Cleaner:

Sprinkle baking soda liberally into the toilet bowl.
Pour vinegar into the bowl, allowing it to fizz and bubble.
Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub with a toilet brush and flush.

Laundry Detergent:

1 cup Washing Soda
1 cup Borax
1 cup Baking Soda
I bar of Fels-Naptha grated
Mix until combined and store in an airtight container. You can add essential oils for a scented soap.

Trips to the grocery store can be expensive ventures. Reduce costs by making your own cleaning products.
