New Year’s Resolutions for New Homes

We are aware of the importance of self-care. New Year’s Resolutions are one way of taking stock of ways we can improve our lives. Our homes deserve the same care and attention. After all, we count on our homes to keep us safe and warm. So while you’re working on a list of ways to take better care of yourself, take time to consider what you can do for your home, to keep it in optimal good health. In particular, if you have a new construction home, you have the opportunity to stay ahead of maintenance issues by employing these good practices.

Test your smoke alarms

Your home smoke alarm batteries should be changed out annually. Make it a practice to test your alarms. Smoke alarms come with test buttons. Hold the button down and wait for the beeps to make sure it is working properly.

Clean your dryer vent

Dryer vents exit your home in a variety of ways depending on your floorplan. It may exit at the base of your home, or it could exit the roof. Either way, make sure you clean your lint screen regularly. And if your vent is tough to access on your own, hire a professional to clean your vent at least once a year.

Change your HVAC filters regularly

Dirty HVAC filters can make your system less efficient but worse, can compromise the quality of your air. Always change your air filter monthly. If you reside in Florida or Coastal Alabama, chances are that you use your air-conditioner most months of the year. Maintenance is key to optimal performance.

Start a Savings Fund for Home Improvements

The beauty of owning a new construction home is that there is probably little to nothing that you have to do to fix or repair a new home. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t things you may want to do. For example, perhaps you want to change out the countertop in your bathroom or install a backsplash in your kitchen.

Being a homeowner means you are responsible for home care. The purchase of a home is by far, the largest investment you’ll make in a lifetime. And if you’re like most people, you’ll probably own a few homes as your needs change. When you keep your new home in tip-top shape, it helps to maintain the value of your home so you can maximize your returns when it is time to sell.
