The Subtleties of Fall in Florida
Monday, September 22nd marks the first day of fall. When most people think of fall, they picture crisp air, colorful foliage, and a break from the summer heat. In Florida, fall is a little different. The change of seasons here is subtle, and for those who live in the Sunshine State, it’s no less welcome or beautiful.
A Softer Shift in Seasons
Florida experiences a gentle easing from the summer’s intense heat into milder, more comfortable days. Humidity begins to dip, breezes feel lighter, and mornings and evenings finally invite a breath of fresh air. Floridians know fall is here when walking the dog no longer feels like stepping into a sauna. The coolest fall temperatures will be found in Florida’s Panhandle where temperatures can be in the mid 40’s by November. While in South and Southwest Florida, the lowest temperatures are going to be in the 70’s by November.
Nature’s Quiet Transformations
Florida’s landscapes offer their own seasonal transformations. Cypress trees in wetlands turn shades of rust and amber, creating an unexpected pop of color against the evergreens. “Swamp” Maples, also known as Red Maples will start showing colors closer to December. In North and Central Florida, you might catch glimpses of golden leaves or the flutter of migrating monarch butterflies on their way south.
A Celebration of Traditions
Fall in Florida is more about traditions than weather. Communities celebrate with pumpkin patches, hayrides, and local festivals even in the warmth. You can probably throw on a long-sleeved shirt in the evening. Football season makes it feel like fall and Floridians gather to support their teams at home and local sports bars. Farmers markets overflow with late-summer produce alongside the first hints of fall flavors. And when it comes to carving your Halloween pumpkin, just remember it will have a very short porch life. You might want to use un-carved pumpkins for decor and plan on carving only a day early.
The Best Time to Be Outside
Fall is time to get back outside. Outdoor life thrives again kayaking, golfing, fishing, or simply enjoying an evening on the porch without the hum of an overworked air conditioner. It’s also prime time for events, from art shows to seafood festivals, making fall one of the most active social seasons of the year. A unique season comes to an end this time of year – baby Sea Turtles stop hatching generally by the end of October. East coast surfers love the fall as cold fronts bring bigger swells making fall a great time for surfing. The fall season brings cooler ocean temperatures that push fish closer to the shore creating great opportunities for hooking Redfish, Snook and Spotted Sea Trout. Fall is a great time for Airboaters, too as temperatures out in the swamp begin to cool a bit.
Appreciating Florida’s Unique Autumn
Florida’s fall may not look like Vermont’s, but it holds its own kind of magic. The season is found in the relief of cooler air, the quiet changes in the landscape, and the joy of seasonal gatherings. For those who call Florida home, the subtleties of fall are a reminder that beauty doesn’t always need to be bold it can be soft, steady, and just as rewarding.
