Furniture Placement in an Open Floorplan
Today’s floorplans are bright, open and airy which is why so many people gravitate to new construction vs resale homes. Older more traditional homes are more segmented, breaking the home’s interior into smaller spaces. In an open floorplan, rooms are connected so that the kitchen flows into the great room, and to the dining area. Open floorplans offer great gathering spaces but can be challenging when it comes to furniture placement. Many of gravitate toward pushing furniture up against a wall and generally speaking, that doesn’t work well in an open floorplan.

The trick to placing furniture isn’t filling space. It is to define the space. If you think of your floorplan as one in which several spaces work together, it helps. Each space has its own purpose. For example, you can float a couch in the living area to create a boundary. The couch subtly separates the living room from a dining space, without the need of a wall. The couch becomes a wall.

Rugs are a great way to define space. They visually show where one space begins and another ends. A rug under a sofa and side chairs defines the living area. Whereas a rug under a dining table sets apart the dining area. The space all still remains open so the room appears light and airy, but the spaces are defined. Be sure to leave clear pathways between your newly defined spaces. You need to be able to move comfortably through the space in a logical fashion.

Holiday Builders’ website offers a very helpful tool for furniture placement. Our interactive floorplans allow you to place furniture in a room to see how things fit. Drag and drop King and Queen sized beds into bedrooms, or dressers, side chairs, couches, or a desk into various rooms. Every element is scaled to size so you can clearly see how your furniture can be arranged. This helps to narrow down the right floorplan for your family. Once you’ve finished designing your home with your furnishings, you can download and print your plan.

Open floorplans are perfect for our busy lives. Watch the evening news, while you’re cooking dinner with the kids doing their homework at the kitchen island. Everything and everyone are gathered into the same area, but with separate activities and purposes. Furniture placement in an open floorplan is more about defining space based on purpose.
